At the Western Base of Rich Mountain.

Fort Garnett was a large Confedertate earthworks, built according to accepted military engineering principles of the 19th Century, that covered the western approaches of the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike to the base of Rich Mountain. It was named in honor of the Confederate commander, and was called either a "Camp" or a "Fort" indiscriminately in records from the period.
